What counts as a low-investment business
Minimal investment usually means an amount you can afford to lose: a few months' savings rather than a loan secured against your apartment. For one person that is 50 thousand rubles; for another it is a million. It is therefore more useful to consider the balance than the figure: the less money you invest, the more of yourself you invest.
A 30–100 thousand-ruble business almost always depends on your own labor. You are the technician, salesperson and accountant. Revenue stops if you are ill or away. This is normal at the beginning, but closer to self-employment than a business that works without you. A larger budget lets you delegate more work to people, equipment or software, making the business less dependent on whether you turn up today.
This leads to the first question to ask before choosing an idea: do you have more money or more time? If you have time but little money, services and resale may suit you. If you have more money but no time, consider formats where equipment does the work rather than you.
Where startup money goes
Beginners usually count only the main purchase: machinery, stock or equipment. Every business also has four other expense categories that people remember only after spending the money.
- Location. Rent, a one- or two-month deposit, repairs or conversion to your needs. For a home business this may be zero; for a shopping-center outlet it often exceeds the equipment cost.
- Launch. Individual entrepreneur or self-employed registration, checkout equipment or acquiring, signage, a website or social-media page, and initial consumables.
- First customers. Advertising before people know you. Word of mouth works, but not in the first month.
- A reserve for the first months. Money to pay rent and living costs until revenue covers expenses. Without this reserve, a good business may close simply because it did not survive long enough to reach its customers.
A rule that prevents half the mistakes: spend no more than half the available money on the main purchase. Keep the rest for premises, launch, advertising and a reserve.
Up to 100 thousand rubles: services and manual skills
This budget mainly suits businesses where your skills are the main asset. Equipment is a tool here, not the income source.
- Mobile household services. Minor repairs, furniture assembly, appliance installation, cleaning, mowing and rubbish removal. You need tools, a vehicle or a transport arrangement, and advertisements.
- Car services without premises. Mobile interior deep cleaning, headlight polishing or seasonal mobile tire fitting. Demand is steady, but the work is physical and entirely yours.
- Reselling on marketplaces. Small product batches for specific demand. Investment is modest, but you must understand listings, advertising and logistics, and your money is tied up in stock.
- Teaching and consulting. Tutoring, courses in your trade or help with paperwork. Investment is almost zero, but scaling is difficult.
All these ideas have something in common: they pay back quickly precisely because you do not pay yourself a salary. If your time is valued at market rates, many profitable microbusinesses turn out to be jobs without an employment contract. This is not necessarily bad, but you should understand it in advance.
Up to 500 thousand rubles: first equipment and an outlet
This budget makes it possible to buy equipment that does part of the work for you or rent a small outlet.
- Small-scale workshop production. Made-to-order furniture, metalwork, printing and engraving. Money goes into machinery, so it is important to know your buyers beforehand.
- A service outlet. A repair workshop, studio or drop-off point. Rent and renovation are the main expense, rather than equipment.
- A parcel pickup point. Entry costs are low, but income depends on traffic and platform terms, and an employee is needed every day.
- Vending machines and terminals. Coffee and vending machines, or photo booths. They work without a salesperson, but location decides everything; a good location costs rent or a share of revenue.
At this level, premises are the main risk. You sign a one-year lease and renovate, then discover traffic is not what you expected. Before investing in the fit-out, check demand: observe the future site on different days, speak to building neighbors and find out whether similar businesses operated there and why they closed.
Up to 2 million rubles: equipment works instead of you
Around two million allows formats where equipment or a system generates income rather than your personal labor. This is no longer minimal investment in the strict sense, but neither is it the tens of millions needed for a city-center café.
- Self-service. Customers carry out the service using your equipment and pay themselves: washes, laundries or charging stations. Staff are needed for maintenance, not every shift.
- A network of machines. Several locations instead of one spread the risk of a poor site.
- An existing business or franchise. Instead of going through trial and error yourself, you pay for an established model. Check it just as thoroughly as your own idea.

The further up this ladder you go, the more important calculations before purchase become. A 50 thousand-ruble mistake is unpleasant; a 2 million-ruble mistake can wipe out years of savings. For equipment-based formats, look at operating sites' figures instead of advertising promises: revenue, expenses and utilization in a bad month.
Quick-payback traps
Low-investment business with fast payback is a very common search, and people who sell ideas rather than businesses profit from it. Here are warning signs.
- One- or two-month payback without calculations. Things pay back quickly when almost nothing was invested. If someone promises to return a large sum in a couple of months, ask for the figures behind the claim and the locations already operating.
- Income without your involvement for a tiny entry cost. The less money you invest, the more of you is needed. Passive income for 50 thousand almost always means you are being sold training or a scheme rather than a business.
- Calculations based only on a good month. Almost everything is seasonal. An honest calculation shows both the best and worst months.
- No real examples. If the seller cannot say where sites operate or connect you with their owners, the model is unproven.
Ask yourself: if I am ill for a month, how much will this business earn? If nothing, you are buying yourself a job. That is a valid choice too, but compare it with a salary, not investments.
How to test an idea before investing
The cheapest business is one you tested before spending money. Almost any idea can be tested in a week with a few thousand rubles.
- Check demand. Wordstat shows how many people search for a service in your city. Avito and local groups show how many offers there are and their prices.
- Find your first customers before launching. Advertise the service before buying equipment. If nobody calls, you have saved your budget.
- Calculate the worst month. How much would you earn with half as many customers as expected? Is the reserve enough to survive three such months?
- Talk to people already operating. Competitors in another city are often willing to explain what surprised them in their first year.

Where a self-service wash fits
To be clear, a self-service wash is not a minimal-investment business. It needs land or premises, a 380 V electrical connection, water, sewerage and a structure for each bay. However, it need not cost tens of millions: you can start with one or two bays and add more once traffic is proven.

Unlike the ideas in the earlier sections, equipment earns the income rather than your hands. Customers wash their own cars and pay at the bay by card, SBP or QR code. The owner views revenue, utilization and faults in the owner account on a phone. Someone is needed on site for cleaning, chemical refills and minor jobs, not to staff a checkout every shift.
Here are our own figures. We manufacture BRIZ equipment in Barnaul; the basic set costs 430,000 ₽ per bay. A franchise bay starts at 450,000 ₽, including delivery, installation, commissioning and training. There is no initial franchise fee; royalties are 5% of an operating wash's revenue. Land or rent, the bay structure, utility connections and paperwork are separate; we assess these after inspecting the site. The complete budget is explained in how much it costs to open a self-service car wash.
If your budget is no longer minimal and is comparable to the cost of a bay and its structure, calculate a wash in your city using the calculator: enter bays, traffic and average transaction. This is a preliminary estimate, not a promise of income.
Frequently asked questions
