How much it costs to open a self-service car wash

A single turnkey figure from an advert is almost always misleading. Here is what the launch budget is really made of and why no two budgets are alike even in neighbouring cities.

Updated: August 2026Launches to date: 69 cities, 3 countries

In short: there is no single turnkey price, and the reason is arithmetic. Only the equipment can be costed exactly: the basic BRIZ package is 430,000 ₽ per bay. Everything around it is costed against your particular site, and the spread there is wider than for the station itself: a ready building with water and 380 V already connected costs many times less than an empty plot. That is why the same car wash costs different amounts in neighbouring cities.

Why there is no single turnkey price

The cost of opening a self-service car wash is made up of several independent items, and each of them changes from site to site. The same equipment in a city with a ready building and in a city where the wash is built from scratch produces budgets that differ several times over. That is why an honest answer to “how much does it cost” starts not with a figure but with a breakdown by item.

Five cost items

1Equipment — from 430,000 ₽ per bay
2Premises: lease or build
3Water and electricity connections
4Installation and commissioning
5Site works, signage, opening advertising

The equipment is the only item that can be costed in advance and precisely. Everything else depends on the site: in one place the electricity is already there, in another connecting it becomes the most expensive line in the whole budget.

Equipment

This is the base everything else is measured from. A package for one bay starts at 430,000 ₽ direct from the factory, with no middleman markup. The final figure depends on the number of bays and the set of functions: water, foam, osmosis, wax, air blower, vacuum cleaner, turbo dryer. It is important not to take “the maximum just in case” — overpaying for options nobody uses adds nothing to revenue.

Count the cost of ownership, not only the purchase price

A cheap station with a domestic pump and weak heating saves money at the start and takes it back in repairs and downtime — especially in its second winter.

Premises and connections

The most variable part of the budget. A ready bay with water and three-phase power needs only a lease and minor adaptation. Building from scratch adds design, foundations, a canopy and approvals — and here the spread runs from a few months to a year in time, and correspondingly in money.

Budget separately for the electricity connection: in some cities it is both the slowest and the most expensive item. The application for the power supply is submitted as early as possible, before installation.

Installation, launch and the first customers

Installation and commissioning at a ready site take days, not weeks. The launch budget should include the sign, the lighting, the access roads and listings on the map services is not “marketing later” but part of the start-up investment, and it affects traffic directly from day one.

How to work out a budget for your own city

The right order is the reverse of the usual one: first a financial model for the specific city (traffic, average ticket, number of bays), from that come the requirements for the site, and the budget is worked out to match. That way you do not overpay for bays you do not need and do not open where the traffic will not repay the investment.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to open a turnkey self-service car wash?

The final figure depends on the number of bays, the city and the state of the site. If you are choosing between building from scratch, a franchise and buying a working car wash, each route has its own budget. As a guide, the equipment starts at 430,000 ₽ per bay; on top of that come the premises, utility connections, installation, site works and opening advertising. The exact budget is worked out for the specific site.

What makes up the cost?

Of five items: equipment, premises, water and electricity connections, installation and commissioning, launch and advertising. With a ready building the budget is noticeably lower than when building from scratch.

Can you open a car wash with a single bay?

You can, but with good traffic a single bay quickly runs into a queue, and a queue drives customers away more effectively than price does. The number of bays is chosen to match the expected traffic, not the minimum budget.

How long does a self-service car wash take to pay back?

As a guide, payback starts from 6 months, but the period depends heavily on the city, the traffic and the utilisation. A realistic calculation is made for three scenarios — conservative, working and optimistic.
