Why “the best car shampoo” is the wrong question
Fifteen thousand people a month search for which shampoo for touchless washing is best. There is no answer to that question, and it is not because sellers are being evasive.
The same concentrate works differently in two cities because the water is different. In hard water part of the active ingredients goes not on the dirt but on binding calcium and magnesium salts, so less reaches the bodywork. A product that cleans beautifully for a friend in the next region may leave a whitish film for you — and there is nothing wrong with the product.
The second variable is the equipment. A foam generator, a foam kit and a dosing system deliver solutions of different concentrations, and the same product behaves differently in each. More about that in the article on car shampoo dilution.
That is why rankings online are almost useless: they compare products without naming either the water or the equipment they were tested on. The practical approach is different — know the criteria by which any offer can be checked.
A bay uses three products, not one
The first mistake when choosing is to look for “the shampoo” as if there were only one. Three different chemistries work in a self-service bay, and substituting one for another makes no sense.
The pre-wash is a first-phase product. Its job is not to clean but to soften the road film and lift it off the paint so that it can then simply be rinsed away. Such products often give less foam — for them it matters more to cling to the body and work by time.
Active foam is the main chemistry. Thick, stable, clinging to vertical surfaces. Our catalogue has three products for foam and thirty for touchless shampoos: that is not an accident but a reflection of the fact that the second phase does the main work.
Drying wax is the finish. It does not clean at all, it changes how water behaves. There is a separate article.

Alkalinity: why “stronger” does not mean “better”
Touchless shampoos are alkaline. The typical working range for a concentrate is pH 12–13; for comparison, shampoos for hand washing are neutral, pH 6–8. It is the alkali that makes touchless washing possible: it saponifies grease and lifts the road film without mechanical action.
From there it is common sense. The higher the alkalinity, the more aggressive the product — and not only towards dirt. Aluminium, chrome, unprotected welded seams, old and resprayed paint all suffer. So “take something stronger” is a poor strategy: a strong product at a weak dilution will not clean any better, but it will manage to do harm.
The right logic is this: alkalinity is matched to your typical dirt, not to the wish to clean everything at once. City dust and summer road film come off with a medium product. Winter salt slush, insect remains and industrial deposits need something stronger.
Phosphates and corrosion inhibitors
Two lines on the data sheet that almost nobody looks at.
Phosphates in a product bind the hardness salts — that is, they help the shampoo work in heavy water. But they come at a price: they are harmful to drains and treatment plants, and in many products they are replaced by other chelating agents. The words “phosphate-free” on a data sheet are not always a plus: such a product is more often designed for soft or medium water. If your water is heavy, read what exactly the phosphates have been replaced with.
Corrosion inhibitors are additives that protect metal from the alkali. In a self-service bay they matter more than you would think: the solution reaches not only the paint but also the wheel arches, the welded seams and the fasteners. The line “contains a corrosion inhibitor” on a data sheet is a sign that the manufacturer thought about more than impressive foam.
Dilution is really about price
Every product's data sheet gives a dilution range: 1:60–1:120, say, or 1:100–1:200. The figures look like a technical detail, but in fact they are the main economic indicator.
A product that works at 1:200 will, at the same price per kilogram, cost half as much as one that needs 1:100. Comparing concentrates by the price of the canister is pointless — what you compare is the price of one wash, and that is worked out through the dilution and the consumption per car.
A useful guide for consumption in a bay is about 35 ml of concentrate per passenger car. Multiply by the number of cars a day and by thirty and you get the monthly requirement, which is what offers should be compared on.
And one more figure that only shows up over the long run: the bigger the pack, the cheaper the unit. On one of our products that is 198 ₽ per litre in the five-litre pack against 113 ₽ per kilogram in the IBC — nearly twice the difference on the very same product.
Which water to buy for
Manufacturers do not state the water hardness for every item, but for some they state it plainly — and it is the most useful line on the data sheet.

If you do not know your water hardness, start with an analysis rather than a purchase. It costs very little and saves far more: in soft water a product “for hard water” is simply more expensive with no benefit, while in hard water a mild product will work at half strength and you will blame the chemistry.

What to look for on the product data sheet
A short list of five lines. If a seller cannot show them for their product, that is already an answer.
First — what it is for. Pre-wash, main wash or finish. A second-phase product will not work in the first phase.
Second — the pH. An understanding of how alkaline the product is and what it can affect besides the dirt.
Third — the dilution range and which equipment it is for. This is where the real cost of a wash is hidden.
Fourth — the water hardness. If it is not stated, ask separately.
Fifth — what it protects. Corrosion inhibitors, safety for plastic, rubber and paintwork.
Everything else — the scent, the colour of the foam, a handsome canister — does not affect the result of the wash. It affects the customer's impression, which is also money, but that is a different conversation.
